Former head of Pakistan’s military intelligence agency sentenced to 14 years in prison.
, General Faiz Hamid, the former head of the Pakistani military intelligence agency, was sentenced to 14 years in prison with hard labor by a military court for abusing government authority and resources and participating in political activities against national security.
The Pakistani military’s public relations department issued a statement today announcing that the accused was tried on four charges related to participating in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act that is detrimental to the security and interests of the country, abusing government authority and resources, and causing illegal losses and harm to individuals.
The statement added: The accused’s participation in fomenting political unrest and instability, with the collusion of political elements and some other cases, will be investigated separately.
In late August last year, the former head of the Pakistani military intelligence agency (ISI) was arrested and put on military trial in connection with a corruption case and violation of military laws.
General Faiz Hamid’s term as the then head of the ISI, Pakistan’s powerful intelligence and security agency, ended in Mehr 1400. He was then appointed as the new commander of the army forces in the city of Peshawar.
The ousted Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, sought to extend Faiz Hamid’s term, and this issue created an unprecedented controversy between the army and the then-government of the country. Eventually, Imran Khan was forced to back down from his decisio,n and another general replaced Faiz Hamid.
