Former South Korean President in the swamp; Indictment issued with new charges!.
According to Al Jazeera, South Korean prosecutors have issued an indictment against former and ousted president Yoon Seok-yeol on charges of abuse of power.
According to Yonhap, the indictment was issued without an arrest warrant. The former South Korean president, who is facing a serious case of sedition after his impeachment and removal, now finds himself in a deeper quagmire with this indictment.
In December 2024, Yoon unexpectedly declared martial law in South Korea. Following this order, the South Korean armed forces were sent to the country’s parliament, but the martial law lasted only 6 hours and was immediately canceled by a vote of opposition representatives. South Korean lawmakers then impeached Yoon Seok-yeol.
South Korea’s Constitutional Court stripped Yoon, 64, of all presidential powers and authority in April. South Korean prosecutors first issued an indictment against him in January. He was still president at the time and was charged with “leading a rebellion,” a charge not covered by the list of presidential immunities.
The new charges against Yoon Seok-yeol came as investigators raided and searched the former South Korean president’s private residence on Wednesday in an investigation into bribery allegations involving Kim Geun-hye, his wife, and a priest who received expensive gifts on his behalf.
If convicted of the rebellion charge, Yoon could face life in prison or the death penalty. Yoon is the second president in South Korean history to be removed from office and the third to be impeached.
With Yoon’s removal, South Korea is set to hold snap elections on June 3.
