Many see him as a hope for the leadership of a future Palestinian state, while negotiations over the current ceasefire in Gaza continue.

The British newspaper wrote that the international scene is witnessing a growing movement to demand the release of Barghouti, who is considered one of the most prominent and popular Palestinian leaders and, for a large part of the Palestinians, a symbol of hope and the possibility of renewed political legitimacy in the occupied territories.

During the prisoner exchange under the Sharm el-Sheikh agreement, the Israeli regime refused to release this prominent Palestinian prisoner.

The son of Marwan Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian activist who is being held in an Israeli prison, has stated about his father’s leadership potential and Israel’s prevention of his release that Tel Aviv does not want a legitimate Palestinian leader.

According to IRNA on Wednesday, Arab Barghouti said in an interview with France 24 that Israel kept his father behind bars because “they do not want a legitimate leader who will take away their credibility from the people.”

Barghouthi, a member of the Fatah movement and reportedly the most popular Palestinian leader, was convicted by an Israeli court of involvement in anti-Zionist operations during the second intifada. He has been in prison for more than two decades.

Arab Barghouthi described his father as a “unifying figure” with a political outlook that was fully aligned with the international community.

Several senior political figures and former diplomats have called on US President Donald Trump to pressure the Israeli regime to release prominent Palestinian political figure Marwan Barghouthi.

According to IRNA’s Al-Shorouk, leaders of the “Wise Group,” which was founded in 2007 by former South African President Nelson Mandela to support peace around the world, condemned the Israeli regime’s mistreatment of Marwan Barghouthi and other Palestinian prisoners and their torture in a statement.

The leaders of the group of international figures stressed that many of them are being arbitrarily detained.

The group, currently chaired by former Colombian President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Juan Manuel Santos, stressed the need for Israeli authorities to adhere to their obligations under international law to protect the rights of prisoners.

The leaders of the group of wise men stated that many Palestinians consider Barghouti their “Mandela,” and even many Israeli political and security figures do not oppose the release of Marwan Barghouti.

The group added: “Only the Palestinian people have the right to choose their own leadership, and we welcome the commitment of the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, to hold free and fair elections under international supervision within the next year.”
