Hamas says WSJ confirms Israel violates prisoner rights.
Hamas stressed in the statement: “This report is an official admission by the occupying government itself of the horrific violations it is committing against our prisoners, which have led to the martyrdom of many of them under torture and deliberate medical neglect.”
The Palestinian movement further added: “This dangerous documentation, in addition to dozens of international and UN reports, unequivocally emphasizes the scale of the unprecedented sadism and crime that the occupiers are committing against the prisoners, and their absolute disregard for all international and humanitarian laws that criminalize torture and cruel and inhuman treatment.”
In the statement, Hamas called on international human rights organizations, especially the International Committee of the Red Cross, to fulfill their responsibilities and take immediate action to expose the dimensions of the horrific violations that Palestinian prisoners are facing in prisons.
The Palestinian movement also called for the leaders of the occupation regime to be tried for their crimes that are blatant before the world, emphasizing that these crimes will never be subject to the statute of limitations.
According to IRNA, the American newspaper Wall Street Journal, citing an official report by the Israeli Public Defense Office, revealed the unprecedented deterioration of the situation of Palestinian prisoners after October 7, a report that describes the current situation as one of the most dangerous detention crises in recent years.
According to the report, Israeli detention centers and prisons have been overcrowded, so that prisoners are forced to live in very limited spaces that lack minimum human standards. A large number of prisoners sleep on the floor due to a lack of beds, a situation that the report described as humiliating and illegal.
Field inspections also reveal almost daily beatings and emphasize that attacks on prisoners by prison guards have become routine. In addition, the quality of food has declined sharply, and medical services have almost collapsed; the severe shortage of hygiene products and the denial of proper treatment have led to the spread of skin diseases, malnutrition, and increased physical injuries caused by beatings.
The official report, which is rarely released from within the structures of the occupation regime, comes at a time when international human rights organizations are increasing pressure for an urgent investigation into these violations, which are a clear violation of international humanitarian law and pose a serious threat to the lives and health of Palestinian prisoners.
