Harvard University officials have filed a lawsuit in federal court in Boston demanding an end to President Donald Trump’s $2.5 billion freeze on the university’s funding, calling it illegal.
According to Reuters, Harvard added in the lawsuit that since April 14, it has received 957 orders from the government to block funding for research on national security threats, cancer, and infectious diseases.
Harvard detailed the details of the blocked funds in the lawsuit: $88 million for AIDS research, $12 million to increase the Department of Defense’s awareness of emerging biological threat,s and $8 million to better understand dark energy. The cuts to this funding would jeopardize ongoing research into cancer, infectious diseases and Parkinson’s.
A few days ago, the US State Department ordered all its consular missions abroad to conduct additional checks on visa applicants seeking to travel to Harvard for any reason.
A few days ago, it was announced that, according to a letter sent to US federal agencies, the Donald Trump administration intends to terminate all its remaining contracts with Harvard University. Contracts that are estimated to be worth about $100 million.
The government has already canceled nearly $3 billion in financial aid to Harvard University and, in the latest pressure on the university, has tried to revoke its international student admissions permit.
In addition, a few days ago, the Trump administration ordered the university to revoke its international student admissions permit.
Accordingly, in addition to the ban on new international students, existing international students must also immediately leave all colleges under the university.
