Berri tells US Hezbollah to hand over arms if Israel makes a step.
A few days after the visit of Tom Barak, the US envoy to Beirut, the figures who spoke with him stated that from the moment he arrived in Beirut, Tom Barak behaved as if the most important meeting for him was the meeting with Nabih Berri, the speaker of the parliament, and in his interview with Al-Jadeed TV, he tried to explain this issue. The US envoy described Nabih Berri as an intelligent and experienced politician who knows a lot not only about Lebanon but also about the region, the world and even the United States.
Nabih Berri’s emphasis on the need to force Israel to fully implement the ceasefire
According to Al-Akhbar newspaper, the most important issue was related to Nabih Berri’s initiative to create a framework for talks with Tom Barak, based on the idea that the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and the Zionist regime is not an issue that the US envoy can ignore.
According to the report, in a conversation with Tom Barak, Nabih Berri provided Tom Barak with a detailed explanation of the course of events since November 27, and placed on the table a list of repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement by the Israeli regime and the exact number of martyrs during this period. Addressing Barak, he said: Given these facts, does Lebanon bear responsibility for the failure to comply with the ceasefire agreement?
The Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament also informed the US envoy that not only the developments in Lebanon but also the devastating and bloody conflicts in southern Syria and the Israeli massacres and attacks on this country, including Damascus itself, have all caused ordinary people in Lebanon to think differently about the issue of weapons.
Nabih Berri poured clean water on the hands of the US envoy regarding the weapons of resistance
Nabih Berri also proposed a series of ideas and initiatives to the US envoy, the most important of which was that the US should convince Israel to stop its continuous aggression against Lebanon and withdraw completely from the country’s territory, after which an atmosphere of stability would be created in Lebanon to discuss other issues, including the start of an internal dialogue on the national defense strategy that would address the issue of weapons of resistance.
According to informed Lebanese sources, Tom Barak understood from Nabih Berri’s positions that it would be very difficult to raise the issue of disarming the resistance as long as the situation remained as it was. Nabih Berri repeatedly spoke with Tom Barak about the conditions of tens of thousands of Lebanese displaced from southern Lebanon and the Zionist regime’s prevention of people’s return to their villages and the start of the process of rebuilding the ruins in the country.
According to available information, it seems that the US envoy understood Nabih Berri’s meaning and therefore said that he had not come to Lebanon to ask for a new agreement. Noting that Israel also believes that the ceasefire agreement has not been implemented, Barak said: “Practical steps must be taken that will allow for discussions on reducing the scope of tension and lead to the initiation of an internal plan in Lebanon to achieve the goal of monopolizing arms control by the government.”
