Hussein Salameh becomes head of Golani government’s intelligence agency

PNN – The Syrian transitional government led by Mahmoud al-Julani appointed Hussein Abdullah al-Salameh as the head of the country’s intelligence agency.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, the Syrian transitional government last night (Saturday) appointed Hussein Abdullah al-Salameh as the new head of the General Intelligence Organization. He replaced Anas Khattab, the former head of the security agency.

Hussein al-Salameh, born in 1984 in the city of al-Shaheel in Deir ez-Zor province, is a member of the al-Aqidat tribe. He completed his secondary education in Deir ez-Zor and then graduated from the Technical Supervisors Institute.

During the Syrian Civil War, Al-Salameh joined the military wing of the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and served as one of its senior commanders. After the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government, he joined the transitional government and was appointed as the interim governor of Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, and Hasakah provinces. However, less than a month later, he resigned from this position, preferring to return to military activities.

In March 2025, following an agreement between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Al-Salameh was appointed to head a five-member committee to oversee negotiations and security arrangements.

The appointment of Hussein al-Salama as head of the General Intelligence Organization is part of the Golani government’s efforts to rebuild and modernize the country’s security institutions. Earlier, Anas Khattab, the organization’s former head, had announced that all security branches would be dissolved and a new structure would be established to maintain the country’s security and stability.

Given Al-Salama’s military background and field experience, he is expected to play an important role in rebuilding the security and intelligence structures in the Golani government.
