Iraqi MP calls for an end to silence on the war against the Tigris and Euphrates.
Iraq possesses various tools to leverage against Ankara, particularly in terms of the trade relationship between the two nations. Iraq imports millions of products from Turkey, amounting to tens of billions of dollars annually.
Al-Fatlawi noted, “The Turkish economy heavily relies on foreign trade, especially with Iraq. These economic ties represent one of the key strengths Iraq can utilize to pressure Ankara regarding water issues and national sovereignty.”
The Iraqi representative emphasized that the government must forge a clear strategy to address Turkish aggression and deploy all available diplomatic and economic measures to safeguard Iraq’s rights and national interests. He cautioned, “Remaining silent in the face of these aggressions could lead to a broader crisis in water resources, the economy, and social stability within Iraq.” There is an urgent need for action at both regional and international levels, enlisting support from Arab and international countries to pressure Turkey into adhering to international laws and existing water agreements, ensuring that these violations do not adversely impact the lives of Iraqi citizens and critical sectors.
Previously, Iraqi political analyst Muhammad al-Dhari revealed that some Gulf Arab countries are financially backing Turkish dam construction projects to undermine Iraq’s rights and weaken its economy. This initiative is part of a broader American-Gulf strategy aimed at destabilizing the Iraqi economy.
According to the analyst, these Gulf Arab nations, along with certain other Arab countries, have invested significant funds in building dams in Turkey, despite the country’s mountainous terrain and sufficient rainfall that diminishes the need for extensive water storage.
Al-Dhari explained that the ultimate goal is to threaten Iraq and weaken its economy as part of a deliberate political and economic agenda. He added, “This plan seeks to devastate Iraq’s economy and agriculture by cutting off water resources and contributing to desertification.” seeks to devastate Iraq’s economy and agriculture by cutting off water resources and contributing to desertification.”
