Iraqi Political Council: First parliamentary session date should be set promptly.

Iraqi Political Council: The first parliamentary session date should be set promptly.

According to the official Iraqi news agency, the Iraqi National Political Council (composed of Sunni political groups) called on the country’s president to set the date for the first session of parliament and the election of its speaker and two deputies as soon as possible.

The council congratulated the confirmation of the election results by the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court.

The Iraqi National Political Council said: “We appreciate the efforts made by the Independent High Election Commission and the judiciary in advancing and completing the process of elections for the sixth term of the Iraqi parliament.”

During a meeting held at the office of Muthanna al-Samraei, head of the Azam coalition, in Baghdad, the council outlined its views on the formation of the future government and its program, as well as the challenges that the new government will face.

They considered it necessary to establish communication and consultations with political partners to accelerate the formation of a government that can respond to the demands of the Iraqi people.

They also emphasized the need to determine the basic priorities that should be included in the program of the future government.

The participants in the meeting called on the Iraqi President to quickly determine the date for the first session of the parliament and the election of the speaker and his two deputies.

They suggested that this session be held before December 25.

Supreme Federal Court of Iraq emphasized in a statement that, after careful investigations, it was determined that the process of electing members of the Iraqi parliament was held in compliance with all legal and constitutional requirements.

The statement said: Due to the lack of evidence to invalidate the results, the final results of the 2025 parliamentary elections are confirmed.

According to the Iraqi Constitution, the new House of Representatives of the sixth term of elections must hold its first session within two weeks from the date of confirmation of the results, and be chaired by the oldest member of parliament to appoint a new speaker of parliament.

After holding the first session, the parliament must elect the president by a two-thirds majority within 30 days, and the president must appoint the candidate of the largest parliamentary faction attributed to the Shiites to form a government within a maximum of two weeks.
