Is Indonesia seeking to lead the global south?

PNN – In a report, the Southern China Morning newspaper wrote: Indonesia is seeking to establish its position as a major player among developing countries by adopting an active foreign policy and joining the BRICS group.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network from this publication, the new President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, has taken an active foreign policy after a few weeks of starting his job to establish Jakarta as a leader in the Global South.

By announcing his desire to join the BRICS group, planning the first joint exercises of the Indonesian navy with Russia, as well as a diplomatic trip to five countries, he showed that he is making a special effort to strengthen Indonesia’s international position. These actions of Prabowo are placed in the framework of the long-standing policy of this country, i.e. “independent and active foreign policy”.

In this connection, analysts predict that Prabowo’s recent interactions with Russia and China, as the two founding countries of the BRICS group, will receive special attention from Western countries. Indonesia, which announced its desire to join this organization on November 4th, has now concluded new agreements for joint exercises with Russia and China.

The comments come as Indonesia resumes joint military exercises with China that were suspended in 2015 due to maritime tensions.

According to this report, the bilateral naval exercise with Russia, which was introduced as a “milestone” by the Indonesian Navy, will be held from Monday to Friday in the waters near Surabaya (Indonesia’s second largest city).

According to Sergey Tolchenov, the Russian ambassador to Indonesia, three frigates, one tanker, one helicopter and one tugboat from Russia will participate in this naval exercise.

He added that these exercises are conducted in order to increase the capabilities and capacities of the naval forces between the two countries and are not against any rival power.

These changes in Indonesia’s foreign policy, centered on cooperation with BRICS countries and strengthening relations with Russia and China, coincide with Prabowo’s global approach to play a greater role in international forums and multilateral institutions.

According to this report, with this new policy, Indonesia seeks to play a more central role in the global south and establish its position as a major player among developing countries.
