Israeli army: Destroying Hamas and rescuing the hostages at the same time is not possible’
The Wall Street Journal reported today, citing an informed source, that Eyal Zamir, the chief of staff of the Israeli army, admitted in a cabinet meeting that expanding the operation in the Gaza Strip threatens the lives of Israeli prisoners.
The newspaper reported that Zamir informed the cabinet that he preferred an agreement to release prisoners in Gaza to continuing the military operation.
On the other hand, the Israeli army radio announced today that the army had informed the political authorities of the regime that it is currently impossible to simultaneously achieve both war goals, namely “the destruction of the Hamas movement” and “the release of prisoners.”
The radio continued by saying that the army believes that the Israeli prisoners in Gaza should be returned first.
This is while the occupying army has recently been faced with the intensification of Palestinian resistance operations in Gaza, which have resulted in the death and injury of a large number of Israeli soldiers.
In this regard, Haaretz reported today that 26 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the start of Operation Gideon’s Chariots, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tries to maintain political stability and prevent an agreement to release the prisoners.
This news comes as the dispute between the IDF Chief of Staff and the Prime Minister over the military option in Gaza has intensified, and Netanyahu, regardless of the lives of Israeli prisoners, is trying to achieve his goals by increasing the scope of the war in the Gaza Strip. While most security and political officials admit that the continuation of the war in Gaza is futile and without a goal.
