Israel’s Attorney General’s Dismissal Process and New Legal Crisis.

Israel’s Attorney General’s Dismissal Process and New Legal Crisis.

In the ongoing crisis between Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet and the judiciary, the Supreme Court of Israel has announced that it will suspend the order for judicial review if the ruling coalition of Gali Baharav-Meara dismisses the Attorney General. This will once again heighten the power struggle between the Supreme Court and the Attorney General with the Netanyahu cabinet.

The escalation of disputes

The story began when the Netanyahu cabinet decided to dismiss the Attorney General, following the many disputes it had with Gali Baharav-Meara. However, instead of carrying out the dismissal process of the Attorney General according to the existing and customary procedures in the administrative system of this regime, which was very troublesome and time-consuming, the Netanyahu cabinet adopted a new regulation according to which the cabinet has great power to dismiss the Attorney General.

This decision aims to seriously weaken the Supreme Court and the entire judiciary against the coalition cabinet, something that Netanyahu’s cabinet had been committed to implementing since January 2023, through various plans such as “judicial reforms.”
