Following a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Italian prime minister’s office said Meloni welcomed Trump’s suggestion that Pope Leo would be interested in hosting talks between Kiev and Moscow. However, the Vatican did not immediately confirm the offer.

Pope Leo, elected two weeks ago and the first American leader of the world’s Catholic Church, said in a speech on May 14 that the Vatican could play a mediating role in global conflicts, without directly mentioning the Russia-Ukraine war.

In a separate statement, the Italian prime minister also announced that he had consulted with other European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the next steps to achieve peace.

The statement said: It was agreed to maintain close coordination between the partners to prepare for a new round of negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire and reaching a peace agreement in Ukraine.
