Jamaica recognizes the state of Palestine

PNN – Five days after the decision of the Republic of Barbados, the government of Jamaica announced its decision to recognize the state of Palestine due to “concerns about the war in the Gaza Strip and the escalation of the humanitarian crisis” in the occupied territories.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network from Europa Press, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jamaica, Kamina Johnson-Smith, announced that by recognizing the State of Palestine, Jamaica strengthens its support for a peaceful solution.

He stated: Jamaica continues to support the two-state solution as the only appropriate option to resolve the long-term conflict, guarantee Israel’s security, and defend the dignity and rights of the Palestinians.

The head of the diplomatic service of this island country in the Caribbean Sea emphasized that this decision was made based on Jamaica’s concern about the war in the Gaza Strip and the escalation of the humanitarian crisis.

According to this Jamaican official, “this decision is in line with Jamaica’s strong commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, which seeks to establish mutual respect and peaceful coexistence between countries, as well as recognizing the right of people to self-determination.”

Jamaica is the 140th United Nations member state to recognize the state of Palestine, announcing the move just five days after Barbados’ decision.

Previously, the last country to recognize Palestine as a state was Saint Kitts and Nevis (an island nation in the Caribbean Sea) in July 2019.

In recent months, diplomatic activities to recognize the state of Palestine have increased.

The UN Security Council recently voted on the resolution to accept Palestine as a full member of the UN. 12 of the 15 members of the Security Council voted in favor of the resolution, while Switzerland and the UK abstained. America was the only member that voted against and thus vetoed this resolution.

The governments of Spain and Ireland have also promoted an initiative in the European Union to recognize Palestine as a state. But since the start of the war in Gaza, Ireland and Spain have repeatedly expressed their readiness to recognize Palestine and have started efforts to strengthen the position of the European Union towards the Zionist regime in response to the crimes of this regime.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez recently announced: We have decided to join the group of countries that recognize the state of Palestine.
