Joseph Aoun becomes Lebanese president/From the army to the Baabda Palace.

General Joseph Aoun, the undisputed commander of the Lebanese army, has been elected as the country’s 14th president after more than two years of presidential vacuum. He has an important responsibility to address the challenges that Lebanon has accumulated over the past years. According to the Tasnim News Agency International Group, the Lebanese parliament elected Joseph Aoun, the country’s army commander, as the country’s new president with 99 votes in the second round of their session today.

General Joseph Aoun, a prominent Lebanese military figure who has been the commander of the country’s army since 2017, was able to put his name on the list of presidents of the country today in the second round of the 13th session of the Lebanese parliament and become the 14th president of Lebanon.

Joseph Aoun is the latest Lebanese military figure to reach the position of president. Before him, Fuad Chehab and Michel Suleiman,… had also gone from the army to the presidential palace. However, some Lebanese parties, including the National Free Movement led by Gibran Bassil, believe that the election of a military official as president is against the constitution.

After Baabda Palace (Lebanon’s presidential palace) was empty for about two and a half years, since October 30, 2022, following the end of the term of former President Michel Aoun, the presidential vacuum in Lebanon was officially ended today and Joseph Aoun is scheduled to reside in Baabda Palace.
