After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Beijing was one of the first countries to support the Pyongyang government. These relations reached a peak during the Korean War (1950–1953), when Chinese forces entered the war in support of North Korea. Since then, the two countries have described themselves as “socialist allies” and “traditional friends.”

Since 2018, relations between the two countries have entered a more active phase again, with several meetings between Xi and Kim. China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner and plays a significant role in providing economic and diplomatic support to the country.

Beijing-Pyongyang relations are a combination of historical alliance, ideological commonality, and regional strategic considerations that have allowed these relations to remain stable despite ups and downs.
