Macron in political impasse; dissolve parliament, resign or be removed.

Macron is in a political impasse: dissolve parliament, resign, or be removed.

Yesterday’s resignation of Sébastien Lecornu, just three weeks after he was appointed French Prime Minister and on the eve of presenting his cabinet list to parliament, has brought the French political situation to a stage that is not new, but it has further demonstrated the depth of the turmoil.

Lecornu faced opposition and criticism as soon as the news of his appointment was announced, and two nights ag,o as soon as the cabinet list was presented. This criticism was not new, but it was significant because, first, half of his cabinet members were the same ministers as the previous prime minister, and second, he had taken steps towards reconciliation with other political parties, but their “partisan tendencies” had again blocked this reconciliation.

Lecornu’s failure to form a cabinet has intensified the political deadlock in France, increasing calls from the government’s opponents for Emmanuel Macron’s resignation and the dissolution of parliament.
