Macron supports the Venezuelan opposition leader’s demand.
Emmanuel Macron wrote in a post on the social media platform “X”: I spoke with Maria Corina Machado, and I support her call for the release of political prisoners [in Venezuela] and their protection.
He added: “Like all Venezuelans, she can count on France’s support for a peaceful and democratic transition that fully respects the sovereign will of the Venezuelan people.”
Machado also wrote in a post on the same social media, praising Macron: “The release of ‘all’ political prisoners is our immediate priority.”
He added: “I call on the heads of state and government and all democrats of the world to support us at this critical moment. Venezuela will be free.”
Macron had previously claimed in a post in his first reaction to the US military attack on Venezuela and the kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro: “The Venezuelan people have been liberated today from the rule of Nicolas Maduro, and they can only be happy about this.”
He also stated that the transfer of power in Venezuela must be peaceful, democratic, and based on respect for the will of the people of the country, claiming that he hopes that Edmundo Gonzalez, who was elected as President of Venezuela in 2024, can ensure this transition as quickly as possible.
The United States attacked Venezuela on Saturday morning in an action that has been met with a wave of international reactions. The Venezuelan government called the action a “military invasion” and, while declaring a state of emergency, called for an urgent meeting of the United Nations Security Council.
At the same time, a number of countries, including some US allies, have cautiously emphasized the need to comply with the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter. Iran, Russia, and several other countries have also condemned Washington’s action and warned of its consequences for regional stability and the international system.
