Macron’s support for the famous French actress against sexual assault charges.
The Spiegel weekly newspaper reported on the political scandal in France and the support of Emmanuel Macron, the president of this country, to Gerard Depardieu, the famous French actor, against the accusations of sexual assault against him.
According to Macron, there is also a presumption of innocence: Emmanuel Macron defended the actor Gerardo Pardio and said: “Despite the accusations of rape against this actor, there should be no prosecution for this actor.”
There have been a lot of negative headlines about Gerard Depardieu recently. There are always new allegations of sexual assault attributed to this French actor, as well as sharp criticisms against him from, among others, a minister. In the shadow of these accusations, the image of this 74-year-old man was even removed from the Paris Wax Museum. But now Depardieu has public support – from the highest political levels.
In 2021, Depardieu was accused of sexual assault in a case brought by actress Charlotte Arnold, who claims she was raped in her Paris apartment in 2018 when she was 22 years old. Depardieu tried to deny the charges, but a Paris court upheld them last year, saying there was serious and confirmed evidence.
Depardieu, however, denied the allegations of sexual assault in an open letter published in Figaro in October, writing: “I have never, ever mistreated a woman.”
A television report in France last month, which included footage of the 74-year-old actor, brought the ethics charges against Depardieu back into the spotlight and sparked a debate about sexism in French cinema.
“Gérard Depardieu” is one of the best-known actors in France and the world, who has won numerous international awards, one of his famous performances is as Christopher Columbus in Ridley Scott’s “Conquest of Paradise” and also as “Jean Valjean” in “Les Miserables” series.
He has two César awards and one Golden Globe award in his film career, and the best actor award at the Venice Film Festival in 1985 for the film “Police” is one of the other prestigious awards of this veteran actor who has about 170 films in his career.
During the presidency of Francois Hollande, this actress left France to protest the increase in taxes for high-income earners, and then Russian President Vladimir Putin granted her honorary citizenship of this country.
So far, he has been nominated for César awards (French cinema Oscar) 15 times and won this award for the films “The Last Metro” and “Cyrano de Bergerac”.
