Madagascar’s president flees country as anti-government protests intensify

PNN – The president of Madagascar has fled to an unknown location following unrest and anti-government protests in the country.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, citing Reuters, Madagascar’s opposition leader, a military source and a foreign diplomat, the country’s President Andry Rajoelina has fled to an undisclosed location after anti-government protests.

Siteni Rodrianasoloniako, the leader of Madagascar’s opposition in parliament, told Reuters that Rajoelina had fled the country after army units joined the protesters.

Protests in Madagascar began on September 25 over frequent water and electricity outages and quickly turned into widespread protests centered on economic issues and the rising cost of living, poverty, and government corruption, with protesters demanding Rajoelina’s resignation.

French President Emmanuel Macron has previously expressed concern about the former Paris colony. At least 22 people have been killed in Madagascar during protests and clashes between protesters and security forces, according to the United Nations.
