Mamdani’s victory heralds a new era for America.
Hanan Ashrawi, the president of the board of trustees of Birzeit University in the West Bank and a former official of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), called Mamdani’s victory “a wake-up call for the United States and the world, especially for Democrats who have gone against their own progressive wing.”
“It’s a message that people are ready for change and a message to the entire political system that society wants social justice and inclusion. I think it’s the beginning of a new era in America,” she said in an interview.
Rev. Monter Isaac, a prominent leader of the Lutheran Church in the West Bank, also called the result “heartening” because, he said, “many liberals give up on Palestine when they run for high office. But Mamdani proved that you can win without giving up on Palestine.”
Palestinian member of the Israeli parliament, Ahmed Tayyibi, also praised Mamdani in an online message, calling him “a leader who was able to inspire all New York communities and defeat racists, Islamophobes, and bigots.”
He concluded with a congratulatory message in Arabic: “Congratulations.”
