Meloni: Italy is closer to recognizing the state of Palestine.
“Italy is ready to play its role in Gaza,” Meloni said Monday night after attending the Sharm el-Sheik meeting on Gaza. “This is a great opportunity.”
He called the day the ceasefire agreement in Gaza was signed “a great day,” and said, “I am honored that Italy participated in this meeting.”
Meloni added, “If the peace plan is implemented, Italy will be closer to recognizing the state of Palestine. My goal is for the state of Palestine to exist and for it to be recognized when the conditions are ready in parliament.”
The Italian prime minister said that the country’s military “has been training Palestinian police forces for years and is working in the European Union mission in Rafah.”
He added that Italy is ready to participate in the “stabilization force” in Gaza and monitor the ceasefire.
The Sharm el-Sheik summit was hosted by Egypt and co-chaired by Egyptian and US Presidents Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Donald Trump, and was attended by leaders and representatives of more than 20 countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Norway, Qatar, Turkey, Jordan, and the Palestinian Authority.
Trump and the leaders of Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, the countries that played a key role in the agreement, held the official signing ceremony of the Gaza peace plan. However, it is noteworthy that the two main parties to the agreement, Israel and Hamas, were not present at the signing ceremony.
Trump signed the so-called Gaza peace agreement at the summit with other regional leaders and then left Egypt for Washington.
