Politico announced that the US government has issued a secret authorization to the Ukrainian military, according to which Kiev can attack Russian territory using American weapons.
US President Joe Biden has given Ukraine secret permission to use American weapons to attack Russian territory, but has made this attack conditional on the proximity of the city of Kharkiv.
The news website Politico reported, citing two Biden administration officials, that the authorization is to help Kiev better defend against Russian advances.
The president recently ordered his team to ensure that Ukraine can use American weapons for counter-fire purposes in Kharkiv so that Ukraine can respond to Russian forces targeting or poised to strike, the officials said.
This is while the Pentagon has said that the restrictions on the use of American weapons to attack deep into Russian territory remain in force.
Under the new authorization, Ukraine can use US weapons for a number of attacks against Russia, including firing missiles at Russian forces along the border.
According to Politico, attacks on civilian infrastructure and the use of long-range missiles to strike deep into Russia are prohibited.
Earlier, Sabrina Singh, the Pentagon’s deputy spokeswoman, told reporters: American weapons sent by Kiev are intended for use on Ukrainian soil, and this issue will not change.
This claim is made while an American official announced that in recent weeks, the United States secretly sent long-range missiles (ATACMS) to Ukraine to be used in the war with Russia, and Ukraine used them for the first time last week.
The American media, citing the unnamed American official, reported that the missiles were part of the $300 million military aid package for Ukraine, which was approved by US President Joe Biden on March 12.
The deployment of the Army’s Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) with a range of up to 300 kilometers was an issue that was discussed in the Biden administration for months. These medium-range missiles were sent to Ukraine last September.
Biden signed the $95 billion aid bill to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan and sent arms and military equipment to Tel Aviv and Kiev, claiming that this law will make the world safer and we must act fast now.
“Within the next few hours, we will begin sending equipment to Ukraine, including air defenses, ammunition for artillery rocket systems, and armored vehicles,” the US president said.
