Mossad’s role in Somalia’s recognition.
According to the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, the official announcement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state is not just a simple political decision; it is the result of years of covert activity and networking by the foreign intelligence service (Mossad) in the region.
Somaliland, which has been operating as an autonomous region since 1991 after the collapse of the central government of Somalia, has not been recognized by any member of the United Nations. Now, Israel is the first member of the United Nations to recognize the region, and this decision immediately met with a strong reaction from Somalia, which still considers the region part of its sovereign territory.
Shortly after the announcement by the Israeli Prime Minister, Somalia, Egypt, Turkey, and Djibouti also issued a joint statement condemning the move and emphasizing their support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced that the statement was issued after a telephone call between Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Ati and his counterparts from the three countries.
Somaliland’s strategic importance to the Zionist regime
From the Israeli perspective, Somaliland is of particular importance due to its strategic location in the Horn of Africa and its proximity to vital Red Sea routes and areas controlled by Ansar Allah in Yemen. The region is seen as a key point for monitoring shipping lanes and containing threats from Yemen. In addition, Somaliland has been proposed as a possible destination for resettling part of the Gaza population, and local authorities have even spoken of their readiness to accept a million Palestinians. However, there has been no official agreement on this issue.
Mossad’s long-standing influence in the region
However, the role of Mossad in this process is very prominent. Israeli intelligence sources have confirmed that Mossad has been active in Somaliland for years and has paved the way for this decision by establishing long-term, secret relationships with local authorities.
“David Barnia,” the ousted head of Mossad, along with “Gideon Sa’ar,” the Israeli foreign minister, have been identified as the main architects of the agreement. According to Israeli officials, secret negotiations between the Israeli regime and local Somaliland authorities began in April in a third country and continued with reciprocal visits and secret meetings, ultimately leading to the signing of a joint statement.
Israeli officials hope that the agreement will encourage more countries to normalize relations with Israel as part of the “Abraham Pact.”
Netanyahu called the move “historic” in his statement and invited the local Somaliland authority to make an official visit to the occupied territories. In turn, he considered the move a preparation for joining the Abraham Accords. Israel has announced that it will begin extensive cooperation with Somaliland in the fields of agriculture, health, technology, and the economy.
However, the United States has apparently refrained from immediately accompanying the Zionist regime, and US President Donald Trump stated in a telephone interview with the New York Times that he would examine the issue, adding, “We are learning the details. I am learning a lot, and I always make the right decisions.” He stressed that he was in no hurry to join Netanyahu in recognizing Somaliland. This stance shows that Washington is trying to maintain a tactical distance from Tel Aviv, although evidence suggests that there is behind-the-scenes coordination between the two sides.
According to the Ma’ariv newspaper, in fact, this Israeli move should be seen as part of a common strategy with the United States; The goal of this strategy is to contain Turkey’s influence in Africa, control the vital Red Sea routes, and create a new regional order, the consequences of which will be visible even in Gaza and in the days after the war. Although the United States claims on the surface that there is no coordination, evidence shows that this decision is part of a larger plan coordinated with Washington.
Israeli Prime Minister recognized the “Republic of Somaliland” as an independent and sovereign state on Friday.
Netanyahu’s office added that the agreement with Somaliland was made within the framework of the agreements known as the “Abraham Pact.
Somaliland is part of Somalia’s territory in the north of the country and has been recognized as an autonomous region in practice for years, but until 2025, Israel will be the only UN member state to recognize Somaliland.
