NATO has been monitoring developments related to the Burevestnik missile (SSC-X-9 Skyfall) for several years. Three weeks ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the successful completion of the missile’s upgrade, saying it would soon enter operational service.
NATO states that the missile can travel at speeds exceeding 900 kilometers per hour and has a range of up to 14,000 kilometers. It has also been reported that the missile’s nuclear-powered engine gives it significant maneuverability.
Putin, however, has insisted that Russia’s enhancement of its nuclear capabilities does not pose a threat to any country.
