Nearly 200 people died in the earthquake in Afghanistan.

The New York Times quoted the head of Herat Province hospital as saying that statistics show that at least 180 people died and nearly 600 were injured in two powerful earthquakes yesterday Saturday.

According to this Afghan official, rescue operations are continuing to find people trapped under the rubble, and the possibility of an increase in the number of deaths in this incident is also high.

Moussa Ash’ari, the head of natural disaster management of Herat province, Afghanistan, has announced that 120 people have died in this earthquake and more than 1000 people, including women, children, and the elderly, have been injured.

He also announced that the Taliban administration has declared a state of emergency due to the possibility of more aftershocks and dozens of villages in Zande Jan district (city) have been completely destroyed and 600 injured have been pulled out from under the rubble.

According to the US Geological Survey, the strength of these two earthquakes was 6.2 on the Richter scale, and the epicenter was located about 25 miles northwest of Herat city, near the border areas of Iran, and at least seven aftershocks occurred following these two earthquakes. The distance between the two earthquakes was less than two hours.

Yesterday, the local media of Afghanistan reported the occurrence of two earthquakes in the western regions of the country, including the provinces of Herat, Badghis, and Farah. According to reports, this earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and was also felt in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Iran’s domestic media also announced that this earthquake was also felt in the city of Mashhad.
