Netanyahu agrees to the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to implement the second phase of the Gaza peace deal, Axios news agency reported, citing two senior US officials.
Netanyahu agreed to move to “phase two” of the Gaza ceasefire deal during a meeting with Trump, the two senior US officials said. Trump also pledged to allow Israel to take military action against Hamas if it did not abide by the deal and begin the process of disarming.
“Netanyahu was very pessimistic about Gaza in the meeting, but he gave us the space to move to phase two of the ceasefire,” a senior US official said.
Trump is expected to announce the transition to phase two in January, the formation of a “Gaza Peace Commission,” and the formation of a new Palestinian technocratic government.
The first meeting of the Gaza Peace Commission, chaired by Trump, is scheduled for January 23, at the same time as the World Economic Forum in Davos.
