Netanyahu considering firing another official as internal divisions widen.
According to Al Jazeera, media reports indicate that the Israeli cabinet will begin its measures to dismiss the cabinet’s judicial advisor today.
This comes as tensions and internal disputes over the performance of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have increased.
Yair Lapid, the head of the opposition movement in the occupied territories, said that Netanyahu will hold a cabinet meeting today to consider the dismissal of the judicial advisor.
Previously, Netanyahu had seriously sought to dismiss the head of the Shin Bet due to a disagreement with him, but this process has been suspended for now.
45 former officials of the Israeli Attorney General’s Office have sent a letter expressing their opposition to the dismissal of the Shin Bet head and the cabinet’s judicial advisor.
Netanyahu is believed to have majority support in government to remove Bar, but the move could be subject to appeals by Israel’s Supreme Court.
“The duty of trust owed by the head of the Shin Bet is first and foremost to the citizens of Israel – this perception is what underlies all of my actions and decisions,” Bar said, “The Prime Minister’s expectation of a personal duty of trust whose purpose contradicts the public interest is a fundamentally wrong expectation.”
In a video statement released on Sunday, Netanyahu said his “ongoing distrust” of Bar led to this decision.
