Netanyahu’s son’s nomination for a ministerial post sparks controversy in Israel.
According to the Palestinian Information Center, Hebrew-language media outlets reported that the Likud party is trying to nominate Netanyahu’s son, Yair Netanyahu, to a high-ranking position in the World Zionist Union, stating that the position is on par with that of a minister in terms of status and privileges, and includes a high salary, a special travel budget, a team of advisors and permanent personal bodyguards.
The Israeli opposition temporarily halted the process of appointing Yair Netanyahu after his name was revealed on the official list of candidates. The Yesh Atid party, led by Yair Lapid, said in a statement: “We learned of the shameful decision to appoint Yair Netanyahu with complete disbelief and will not sign such an agreement under any circumstances.”
Lapid emphasized: “We will continue our efforts to combat corruption and will never allow such a thing to happen.”
An Israeli opposition official described the move as a deception and abuse of official agreements to create a special job for the prime minister’s son, calling it a full-scale fraud.
This controversy comes at a time when Netanyahu’s cabinet has been repeatedly accused of using official institutions for personal and family interests; accusations that have exacerbated the gap between the cabinet and the opposition in the Israeli political scene.
