New US and Israeli plan against Lebanon from UNIFIL’s gate.
While the United States and the Zionist regime have made repeated attempts to change the mission of UNIFIL, the so-called UN peacekeeping force based in Lebanon, after the July 2006 war with Lebanon, in order to surround Hezbollah, and these efforts were followed in other forms and methods in the recent war, the Hebrew newspaper “Jerusalem Post” reported last night that Tel Aviv and Washington have proposed a complete end to the UNIFIL mission or a limited extension of its mission that would include a withdrawal in coordination with the Lebanese army.
The Zionist media outlet, citing an informed source who did not disclose his name, announced: Israel and the United States have conveyed their opposition to the automatic extension of the UNIFIL mission to the members of the UN Security Council and have called for a reassessment of the necessity of the continued presence of international forces in Lebanon.
This news comes ahead of a scheduled meeting of the Security Council at the end of August on the extension of the UNIFIL mission.
The source explained that Israel and the United States have proposed two options for the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon: the first option is the complete end of the international forces’ mission in Lebanon and their gradual withdrawal from the region, and the second option includes a one-year extension of the UNIFIL mission with specific tasks, including the orderly dismantling of its positions, a withdrawal in coordination with the Lebanese army, and the complete transfer of security responsibility to the Lebanese government.
This proposal by the United States and the Zionist regime, which has not yet been officially approved by any party, comes at a time when the United States has been pressuring the Lebanese government to disarm Hezbollah, and the Lebanese government, which had proven its passivity and weakness in the face of Washington’s dictates and the Zionist regime’s aggression and occupation from the beginning, recently approved a decision to disarm the resistance, which was met with widespread opposition inside Lebanon.
Previously, in each period, as the date for the extension of the UNIFIL mission approached, numerous scenarios were proposed, and pressure, especially from the United States, increased to change the mission of the international forces and strengthen their presence in areas controlled by Hezbollah.
