Pak Sahafat – An American newspaper, referring to recent reports and studies regarding the possibility of flooding in northern Libya, wrote that the human disaster in the city of Darna, which left more than 11,000 dead, was due to neglect and lack of repairs to the upstream dams of this city.
According to the report of Pak Sahafat International News Agency, the American newspaper New York Times in a detailed report discussed the devastating flood in the city of Darna, located in the north of Libya, and wrote that this human disaster was the result of decades of neglect and inattention to warnings by the relevant authorities.
In this report, a study published by Abdul-Wanis Ashour, an engineer and professor at the University of Libya in 2022, is cited, in which it is emphasized that the residents of Darna are at high risk of devastating floods.
By warning the residents of this city and the authorities, he cites the storms that have occurred in the region in recent decades and says that devastating floods like the 1959 flood can lead to the breaking of the dams and the drowning of the city. He said the situation was “dangerous”.
Last week, Daniel storm in the Mediterranean caused a lot of rain in northern Libya, as a result of which, two dams in the upper reaches of the city of Darna were broken, and as a result, a devastating flood entered the city center and completely destroyed 25-30% of this city.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs announced that the number of victims of the Derne Lili flood has increased to 11,300 and the number of missing has increased to 10,000.
The city officials have been forced to evacuate the city because, according to them, it cannot be used.
