Nobel Peace Prize: A test that Trump fails.
Trump has repeatedly called himself a Nobel Peace Prize winner in recent years and has made claims in speeches, press conferences, and campaign rallies about his role in bringing peace to various parts of the world. All of these claims have received renewed media attention after the US president received the FIFA Peace Medal a few days ago.
Interestingly, it was in 2018, at the same time as efforts were being made to negotiate with North Korea, that Trump first spoke publicly about the possibility of receiving the prize. According to the Newsmax website, in response to a question about his qualifications, he stated that everyone thinks he deserves the prize, although he said that he himself would not make such a claim directly.
At the same time, he claimed that “the prize he wants is a victory for the world,” and not a title or personal honor. Although he cited his efforts to reduce tensions with North Korea as a reason for his Nobel Peace Prize, in practice, no lasting results were achieved.
Since then, the Nobel Prize has become a constant theme in Trump’s speeches. In 2019 and 2020, Trump has repeatedly compared himself to former US President Barack Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009. The Guardian newspaper reported that Trump claimed that if his name were Obama, he would have been awarded the Nobel Prize “in 10 seconds.” This statement, which was repeated many times at campaign rallies and public speeches, reflected his deep dissatisfaction with what he called the “politicization of the Nobel Prize selection process.”
