Official confirmation from the Electoral College: “Donald Trump is the 47th President of the United States”
According to Russia Today, with the approval of the Electoral College, Donald Trump was officially introduced as the 47th President of the United States.
In the November 5th US presidential election, Trump managed to defeat Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who received only 226 votes, by winning 312 electoral votes.
The US president-elect also won the popular vote in the November 5th election, winning 77.2 million votes against Harris’s 75 million votes.
In the United States, unlike other democracies, the people do not directly elect the president, but rather members of the Electoral College, who have been previously elected by the candidates or their parties, make this choice.
In 48 states plus the District of Columbia, all these representatives are required to vote for the candidate in question according to the popular vote in their home state, and their personal party affiliation does not affect this choice.
In Maine and Nebraska, the process is slightly different, with the results largely determined by the popular vote within each congressional district.
Traditionally, the Electoral College meets in all 50 states on the first Tuesday after the second Wednesday in December, which this year was held yesterday (December 17).
Once signed and certified, the results will be forwarded to the vice president who is serving as the presiding officer of the Senate. This process must be completed by December 25, 2024. After the new Congress convenes, lawmakers will count the Electoral College votes on January 6 and declare the winning vice president. Donald Trump and his running mate, J.D. Vance, will be sworn in, and the inauguration will take place on the evening of January 20, 2025.
