Pakistani newspaper: US opposed Taliban FM visit to Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Dawn News reported that the United States has blocked the Taliban’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi from traveling to Pakistan by withholding diplomatic immunity.
Diplomatic sources reported that Washington first delayed the issuance of the immunity and then completely blocked it.
A spokesman for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry had previously attributed the cancellation of the trip to “procedural issues” and stressed that the government in Islamabad was working to resolve the obstacles. Amir Khan Muttaqi was expected to visit Pakistan last Monday, but the plan was abruptly canceled.
Initially, it was thought that the travel ban was due to UN Security Council sanctions, but it turned out that the final decision in this regard was made by the US government.
A Pakistani diplomat said that Amir Khan Muttaqi could visit Pakistan next month. These developments are seen as a sign of a slow but steady improvement in relations between Kabul and Islamabad.
