Pakistan’s official request to join BRICS.

Pakistan’s official request to join BRICS.

Mohammad Khalid Jamali, Pakistan’s ambassador to Russia, announced in an interview with TASS news agency that Pakistan has submitted a request to join the BRICS group of countries in 2024 and needs Russia’s help in the membership process.

In response to the question of whether Islamabad has submitted its proposal for BRICS membership, he said, “Pakistan has submitted its request. “Islamabad plans to join this group under the presidency of Russia in 2024.”

The BRICS group currently consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Currently, South Africa heads this group.

The term BRICS is formed by combining the first letters of the English names of these countries. 30% of the gross production and 40% of the world’s population are defined in BRICS.

In July last year, Saeed Khatibzadeh, the then spokesman of Iran’s Foreign Ministry, announced that Tehran had submitted an official application for BRICS membership. “Alberto Fernandez”, the president of Argentina, also said in the virtual meeting of the heads of “BRICS Plus” (members of BRICS and several other countries) that this country wants full membership in the BRICS group.

At the beginning of September this year, Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa, as the head of the BRICS group, announced in the final statement of the 15th BRICS summit that Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia will be considered as official BRICS members from January 2024. We once again emphasize BRICS’ commitment to multilateralism and respect for international law.
