World leaders gather in New York each September for a multi-day session of the United Nations General Assembly. The session allows world leaders to take the stage and address member states.

The United Nations was founded in 1945 with 51 original members and has since grown to 193. The heads of two non-member observers, the Vatican and Palestine, and one observer member, the European Union, can also address the assembly.

“Let me begin with two words that we have not said enough in this hall,” said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who opened the 80th session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday afternoon. The principles of the United Nations are under pressure. We must choose between a world of chaos and a world of stability and peace.”

In another part of his speech, the UN Secretary-General addressed an important issue in the international arena these days and called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza and a prisoner exchange.

He continued, referring to the issue of famine in Gaza and the Israeli regime’s attack on journalists, saying: “Hunger has become a weapon.”
