Pentagon: We have developed a draft for the construction of the “Golden Dome” defense system.
A Pentagon spokesman said the Pentagon has developed a draft architecture for the proposed Golden Dome missile and air defense system.
According to ISNA, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told Bloomberg that following President Donald Trump’s January 27 executive order, the department “gathered the brightest minds and best technical talent to explore a full range of options that leverage current missile defense technologies and advanced U.S. innovations to rapidly develop and create a reliable protective umbrella for the United States.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett and other senior Pentagon officials are poised to announce a “path forward” in the coming days, he added, according to RIA Novosti.
The Congressional Budget Office has said that $542 billion could be spent over 20 years to develop and launch the space-based interceptor network, which is likely to be the most controversial part of the system. Even at the lowest level, it could cost $161 billion.
The Pentagon spokesman also said the final price will depend on the system’s launch cost and the number of weapons placed in orbit.
According to Trump’s executive order issued on January 27, the “Golden Dome” architecture should include plans to defend against advanced ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles, accelerate the deployment of hypersonic and ballistic space-based tracking sensors, and develop and deploy space-based interceptors with enhanced missile interception capabilities.
