Primary elections and emergency meeting of Erdogan’s largest opposition party.
According to TRT, the primary elections of the Republican People’s Party, the most important rival of the ruling party in Turkey, the Justice and Development Party, will be held tomorrow, Sunday, March 23.
According to the media, the purpose of holding these elections is to introduce the party’s candidate to participate in the upcoming presidential election.
So far, the only candidate for this term is the arrested mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu.
According to TRT, the Republican People’s Party is also scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on April 6 (Sunday, April 17) to prevent the appointment of a guardian for the municipality, during which new candidates will be introduced.
“Özgür Özel” (chairman of the Republican People’s Party) also announced that he wants to run for the party again. There is also speculation that Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu will also announce his candidacy.
Imamoğlu, the arrested mayor of Istanbul, called on people to go to the polls in a message.
According to the Turkish newspaper, after Imamoglu’s arrest, speculation has been rife about the possibility of appointing a guardian to manage the Istanbul municipality.
This has led to concerns within the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and among Imamoglu’s supporters.
CHP leader Özgür Özel announced that his party had decided to hold an extraordinary meeting to prevent such actions.
He also announced that by holding the meeting, the party would show the Turkish people that it would confront such government interference.
Özgür Özel will announce at the extraordinary meeting that he will run for party leadership again, and party members can also apply for leadership.
Now, all eyes are on Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the former CHP leader. Kılıçdaroğlu had handed over the leadership of the party to Özgür Özel at the previous congress, but now the question has arisen whether he will run for party leadership again.
