Prominent American Journalist: No One Negotiates in Public; Should Not Be Taken Seriously.
Laura Rosen, a prominent US foreign policy correspondent, says that the positions of officials in the US President Donald Trump administration are unclear!
Eric Brewer, a former director of the US National Security Council’s nuclear proliferation division who now works at the Nuclear Threat Initiative think tank, wrote in a message on X: If, as it seems, Whittaker signaled to Iran last week in Oman that the US is not seeking to dismantle their enrichment program but is now planning to demand dismantling (the enrichment program), then we should probably expect the second meeting to be “very brief”!
Rosen wrote in response to this message: I don’t know if it’s worth saying, but given that no one knows what this administration is doing, the State Department spokesman’s remarks today suggest that the US’s publicly announced positions should not be taken too seriously.
Earlier, despite the claim of Steve Whittaker, Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East, about the need to “dismantle Iran’s enrichment and weapons programs in order to reach a final agreement,” US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said: “When some words are said publicly at the moment, it should be kept in mind that these are not part of the negotiation process and what they are discussing with each other. No one negotiates in public. You always have to wait.”
Trump’s special envoy for the Middle East has claimed: “Any agreement means that Iran must stop and eliminate its nuclear enrichment and weapons program! It is important for the world that we reach a strong, fair and lasting agreement with Iran, and this is what President Trump has asked me to do. Any final agreement with Iran must create a framework for peace, stability and prosperity in the Middle East (West Asia).”
