Putin agrees to a ceasefire plan in Ukraine with conditions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country agreed with US proposals to end the fighting in Ukraine, but any ceasefire agreement must lead to long-term peace, according to Al Jazeera.
According to Putin, any ceasefire agreement must address the root causes of the Ukrainian war.
The Ukrainian delegation and US representatives met in Jeddah on March 11, after which the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a statement. According to the statement, the parties agreed to finalize a comprehensive agreement on the development of Ukraine’s vital natural resources as soon as possible.
Kiev also announced its readiness to accept Washington’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in the war with Russia. In return, Washington pledged to quickly resume the provision of aid and information to Kiev.
This is while Yuri Yushakov, a senior Kremlin adviser, has emphasized that there is no benefit for Russia in the US proposal and at the same time, a 30-day ceasefire will give Ukrainian forces a chance to breathe and recuperate.
According to Reuters, the Russian army has made significant advances since mid-2024 and has taken control of about a fifth of Ukraine’s territory. Moscow, which began its “special military operation” in Ukraine in February 2022, cited Kiev’s ambitions to join NATO as one of the root causes of the conflict.
