Russia: No wonder Iran wants to withdraw from NPT

PNN – The Russian representative said: It is not surprising that voices in favor of withdrawing from the NPT are becoming increasingly louder in Iran.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network; Mikhail Ulyanov, Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to International Organizations in Vienna, said in an interview with RTVI about the prospects of Iran’s withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT): In fact, the idea of withdrawing from the NPT is gaining popularity in political, public and parliamentary circles of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

He noted: The United States and Israel are undoubtedly responsible for this. With their massive and unprovoked aggression against Iran, they have dealt a serious blow to the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

Ulyanov continued: Let me remind you that the NPT is based on a balance of interests. The non-nuclear states that are members of this treaty pledged not to acquire nuclear weapons, and in return, they received the inalienable right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

He added: The United States is trying to deprive Iran of this right by using military means and insists on the complete dismantling of its nuclear program. Therefore, it is not surprising that voices in favor of withdrawing from the treaty are becoming increasingly louder in Iran.

The Russian representative continued: If the United States and Israel do not want such a scenario to come true, they should immediately stop military operations and finally enter into serious negotiations, recognizing Tehran’s legitimate right to the peaceful use of nuclear energy under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He emphasized: As for Russia’s position, we support further strengthening of the nuclear non-proliferation regime based on the NPT. We hope that the leadership of the Islamic Republic of Iran will not make such an important decision under the influence of emotions. If necessary, we strongly urge our Iranian partners to refrain from radical actions in relation to the NPT.
