PNN – The Russian Embassy in Sudan responded to a report by an American newspaper about the construction of a Russian naval base.
According to the report of Pakistan News Network, citing Sputnik, the Russian Embassy in Sudan stated that media reports about building a Russian naval base in the country are aimed at raising longstanding concerns over Moscow’s presence in the Red Sea over the past five years.
The embassy emphasized that the Wall Street Journal’s report was published without providing any evidence in this regard.
The American newspaper Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that the Sudanese military government has offered Russia the construction of its first naval base in Africa and the creation of an unprecedented strategic position overlooking vital trade routes in the Red Sea.
According to Sudanese officials, if this deal is completed, it would provide a strategic advantage for Moscow, which seeks to deepen its presence in Africa. This development is a concerning event for the United States, which aims to prevent Russia and China from controlling African ports.
The report adds that, based on a 25-year proposal submitted by the Sudanese military government to Russian officials last October, Moscow would have the right to deploy up to 300 soldiers and berth up to four warships—including nuclear ships—at Port Sudan or another Red Sea facility that has not yet been specified.
