South Africa wants to declare apartheid against the Israeli regime.
South Africa plans to refer to the International Court of Justice to declare the Israeli regime as an apartheid state. Not only did South Africa indict Israel for war crimes at the International Criminal Court (ICC), but it also asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to declare it an apartheid state.
This issue was announced by South African Foreign Minister “Naldi Pandor” in response to a parliamentary question.
He pointed out that South Africa and Palestine are currently working on developing practical strategies to present the Palestinian case to the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice to “declare Israel an apartheid state”.
Pandour continued that South Africa will directly request the International Court of Justice to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of the ongoing violation of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, the long-term occupation, settlement, and annexation of Palestinian territories occupied by Israel since 1967. to give
At the continental level, South Africa opposed the unilateral granting of official observer status to Israel by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission on July 22, 2021, the South African Foreign Minister noted. In this regard, South Africa was instrumental in not granting Israel observer status in the African Union, and in February 2023, it welcomed the suspension of Israel’s observer status in the African Union.
This action took place while Israel’s oppression became more brutal, the oppressed Palestinian people faced bombardment and continued illegal settlements in their land, and Israel was hindering any efforts for the peace process.
Also, on March 7, the South African Parliament voted in favor of the proposal to downgrade the South African embassy in Israel to the level of a liaison office. Since the recall of the South African ambassador from Tel Aviv in 2018, the South African embassy in Israel has been run by a chargé d’affaires.
Pandour added: At the international level, South Africa also supports Palestine’s efforts to become a member of the United Nations and to establish positive, credible, and sustainable international mechanisms to deal with the Palestinian issue based on international laws.
