Türkiye’s TRT network also announced that Venezuela made this request on Thursday in a letter addressed to Vasily Nebenzia, Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations and the current president of the Security Council.
In its letter, Venezuela accused the administration of US President Donald Trump of attempting to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and threatening regional and international peace, security, and stability.
The Maduro government had also warned of an imminent attack on the country.
The request came a day after members of the US Congress voted down a bill that would have limited Trump’s ability to use deadly military force against drug traffickers.
The US military has carried out four deadly attacks in the Caribbean since increasing its naval forces in the region for what Trump has called an “armed conflict” with drug trafficking groups.
However, the Maduro government has stated that the White House is only using drug trafficking as an excuse for this operation.
