Spokesperson of the US State Department: We do not see a role for Hamas in the future

PNN – A day after the United Nations Security Council approved the resolution establishing a ceasefire in Gaza, Matthew Miller, the spokesperson of the US State Department, announced that Washington does not see any role for Hamas in the future.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network, Matthew Miller, the spokesperson of the US Department of State, in response to the question whether Washington considers a role for Hamas in the future of Palestine and a political solution, said: “not at all”.

Repeating Washington’s claims about Hamas, the spokesperson of the US State Department claimed: “Hamas is a ruthless terrorist group that had carried out terrorist attacks even before the heinous attack on October 7, 2023.”

The US State Department official continued: “Hamas has no right to political participation because its hands are stained with blood.”

Miller also rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claim that this resolution was an obstacle to negotiations between Tel Aviv and Hamas and that the United States did not veto it.

He added: Israel’s statement that the UN resolution prevented the hostage negotiations is false.

Finally, on March 25, 2024, the members of the United Nations Security Council, with 14 positive votes of this council, as well as the abstaining vote of the United States and the absence of this country’s veto, agreed to the resolution 2728 to establish an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, so that a ceasefire will be in place in the remaining 15 days of the holy month of Ramadan.

The United States had previously vetoed three ceasefire resolutions, but this time it abstained from voting on this resolution, and in this way, due to the lack of opposition from the permanent members of the Security Council, this resolution was approved without any opposition. This resolution was approved by 10 non-permanent members of the Security Council.

This resolution called for the implementation of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza in the month of Ramadan and said that the immediate ceasefire in the month of Ramadan should be observed by all parties, which would lead to a sustainable ceasefire.

The resolution also calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and guarantees humanitarian access to meet their medical and other humanitarian needs, and calls on the parties to fulfill their obligations under international law in relation to all detainees.

Following the approval of this resolution, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced: The trip of the Israeli delegation to Washington, which was supposed to discuss the operation in Rafah, was canceled.

Netanyahu’s office announced in this statement: America has withdrawn from its decisive positions and the Israeli delegation will not go to Washington. This American action harms the efforts to free the prisoners; Because it carries a message for Hamas that international pressure will allow a ceasefire agreement to be reached without the release of prisoners.

On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian resistance groups launched the “Al-Aqsa Storm” operation from Gaza against the positions of the Israeli regime, and finally, on November 24, 2023, a four-day temporary ceasefire was established between Israel and Hamas, or the pause for the exchange of prisoners between Hamas and Israel. This pause or temporary ceasefire lasted seven days and finally ended on December 10, 2023, and the Israeli regime resumed attacks on Gaza.
