Stopping American aid to Gabon after the military coup

Pak Sahafat – The US Secretary of State announced the plan to suspend the country’s aid to Gabon in response to the military coup there last month.

According to the report of Pak Sahafat International News Agency, “Anthony Blinken”, the US Secretary of State, stated that until “the government evaluates the illegal intervention of Gabonese army forces, there is a plan to stop sending foreign aid to this country”.

The Biden administration has suspended most of its aid to Gabon since Tuesday after last month’s military coup in Gabon, the second in an African country this year.

Blinken announced the reason for the suspension of American aid to Gabon is the investigation of the circumstances that led to the removal of the former president of this country, Ali Bongo Odiba.

Ali Bongo was removed from the presidency on August 30 after his victory in the new round of presidential elections was announced by the government.

According to Blinken, the suspension of foreign aid to Gabon is fully consistent with the measures taken by the Economic Community of Central African States and the African Union.

Earlier this month, Gabon’s new military leader, General Brice Oligo Nguema, was sworn in less than a week after ousting the president, who had ruled Gabon with his family for more than five decades, and was announced as the leader of Gabon’s transitional government.
