Sudan and Somalia: Trump’s new destination for forced displacement of Gazans.
The Palestinian Information Center reported that the US and Israeli governments have contacted Sudan, Somalia and Somaliland (an internationally unrecognized breakaway region in Somalia) to discuss the relocation of Palestinians to these areas. The move is part of US President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza, which is backed by the Israeli regime.
The Associated Press reported that the contacts included the governments of Sudan and Somalia, as well as Somaliland officials. According to Sudanese officials, they have rejected the US proposals, while Somali and Somaliland officials said they were unaware of any such contacts.
The US and Israeli officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the contacts with Somalia and Somaliland. US officials also confirmed that contacts had been made with Sudan, but the level of progress in the talks was unclear. The US and Israeli efforts to reach out to these countries began days after Trump’s Gaza plan was unveiled, the officials said, with Tel Aviv leading the negotiations.
The Associated Press reported that Israel and the US have outlined a package of financial, diplomatic, and security incentives to Sudan.
Two Sudanese officials confirmed that the Trump administration has contacted Sudan’s military junta to discuss accepting the Palestinians. One of the officials said the contacts began even before Trump took office and included offers such as military aid to Sudan in exchange for a rapid response force, assistance in rebuilding the country after the war, and other incentives. However, Sudanese officials said the offer was immediately rejected and never raised again.
As for Somaliland, a US official present at the talks confirmed that Washington is holding confidential talks with the region’s authorities on a range of issues and is exploring the possibility of recognizing the region in return. But as for Somalia, a Somali official denied any contact about accepting Gazan Palestinians or holding talks in this regard.
