Sudani initiative aims to resolve the prime minister’s dispute.

According to Iraqi media, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani presented an initiative during a meeting described as “important” by members of the Coordination Framework in Baghdad. This initiative was delivered in the form of an official letter addressed to the leaders of the Coordination Framework.

In this letter, the “Prosperity and Development” coalition emphasized the need for political forces to resolve the issue of selecting a prime minister as soon as possible. They warned that delays in this process could pose serious risks to the country’s political and economic stability.

The initiative comes at a time when the Coordination Framework is experiencing significant disagreements about how to select a prime minister. These disagreements involve factors such as the preferred personality traits of candidates, the method of nomination, and the level of political consensus required. Such disputes have prolonged negotiations and complicated the political landscape in Iraq.

Political sources warn that if these disagreements continue without resolution, they could lead to increasing internal pressures, resulting in growing public dissatisfaction, disruptions in government functioning, and concerns about a potential political vacuum.

The “Prosperity and Development” coalition underscores that the current situation requires a prompt yet thoughtful decision to maintain unity and coherence within the Coordination Framework. This is essential to prevent internal disagreements from weakening the coalition or providing a pretext for foreign interference in national decision-making.

In the initiative, al-Sudani outlined four main criteria for selecting the prime minister-designate:

1. The candidate must be chosen from within the Coordination Framework.

2. He must possess practical experience in managing government and executive institutions.

3. He should have a realistic vision and a clear government program capable of addressing upcoming challenges.

4. He must have broad domestic support to facilitate government formation and strengthen public trust.

Furthermore, the coalition proposed that if no political agreement is reached on a prime ministerial candidate, the number of seats held by political forces within the Coordination Framework could be used as an alternative mechanism for determining the outcome. This approach aims to respect election results and prevent a prolonged political deadlock.

Observers believe that the initiative from the “Prosperity and Development” coalition serves as a warning that ongoing disagreements within the Coordination Framework may evolve into a broader issue, attracting both domestic and external political pressures. Therefore, it is crucial to reach an agreement swiftly that preserves the unity of the Shiite factions and enables a smooth transition to a functioning government.
