Sweden sentenced a woman to 12 years in prison for genocide in Syria

PNN – A court in Stockholm sentenced a Swedish woman to 12 years in prison on charges of genocide, crimes against humanity and gross war crimes committed against women and children of the Yazidi religious minority in Syria in 2015.

According to the report of Pakistan News Network from Reuters news agency, the regional court of Stockholm declared in its ruling: These crimes are considered a very serious violation not only against the life and integrity of certain people, but also against the fundamental human values and humanity.

The woman, identified as Lina Ishaq, a 52-year-old Swedish citizen, returned to Sweden in 2020 and is currently serving a sentence for other crimes she committed in Syria.

The court announced about her: With her actions, this woman supported the imprisonment and captivity of the injured people, which was started by ISIS.

Isaac’s lawyer, Mikael Westerlund, told Reuters that she still denies the charges and plans to appeal.

The crimes “took place during the ISIS rule in Raqqa and are the first time that ISIS attacks against the Yazidi minority in Sweden have been prosecuted,” Chief Prosecutor Reena Devgun said in a statement.

According to this report, the United Nations has declared that ISIS attacks against Yazidis are a series of genocidal operations against them. Yazidis are one of the oldest religious minorities in Iraq.

ISIS controlled large parts of Iraq and Syria from 2014 to 2017 before being defeated in its last strongholds in Syria in 2019.
