Taliban: Girls’ education will be provided within an “appropriate” framework

Taliban: Girls’ education will be provided within an “appropriate” framework.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that Taliban leader Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada is not against girls’ education, but insists that education should be provided in conditions that are “appropriate and safe.”

He added: “Just as we provide a safe environment for our daughters and sisters, a similar safe environment must be created for all girls in the country before allowing them to continue their education.”

Mujahid told the BBC that the Taliban’s main priority in educating girls is to preserve their veil and chastity.

A spokesman for the Taliban government stressed that the educational framework in question would be implemented after the security and cultural conditions were met.

Since the recent developments in Afghanistan, secondary schools and universities have been closed to girls, and these restrictions have drawn widespread domestic and international criticism. The Taliban say they are considering a “comprehensive plan” for the future education of girls.

The Taliban government had previously promised that girls’ education would resume once “religious and cultural conditions” were met.
